July, we accepted 8,683 pieces of donated equipment. Shelly and Maureen are two of the amazing volunteers who ready this equipment to be distributed to our community.

Shelly started volunteering once or twice a month in 2023 after hearing about us through a friend. Shelly said, “Before long, I completely fell in love with the mission and everything the organization stands for and started volunteering as much as I could! A Caring Closet came into my life just as I was adjusting to being an empty nester, and it has given me so much more than a place to volunteer. I’ve made lifelong friendships, and I truly adore the people I work with.

Receiving donations is about much more than accepting equipment. It’s important to tune in emotionally to the people who share their donations with us. Many are donating items after the loss of a loved one. They’re not just parting with wheelchairs, walkers, or medical equipment—they’re saying goodbye to memories and a chapter of their lives. Being able to meet them with compassion, kindness, and understanding is one of the most meaningful parts of what we do. I’m so proud to be part of this team!”

Maureen has been with us just over a year after seeing a Facebook post looking for volunteers. Initially drawn to the flexible schedule, she was pleasantly surprised to find lifelong friendships. She says, “Shelly nailed it about what it means to accept donations. It’s so much more than just checking in a wheelchair. I love being part of this organization.”
